We are thrilled to announce the 2026 Main Street Summer Theater Festival, featuring youth performances in Atwood, Colby, Goodland, Hoxie, Oakley, and Quinter!

All local youth ages 5-18 are welcome to participate free of charge, thanks to the generous support of our grant providers, previous festival proceeds, community supporters, and fundraising efforts.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

We are excited to announce 12 paid summer internship opportunities to help us produce our 2026 Main Street Summer Theater Festival across northwest Kansas!

These internships are made possible through the Nex-Generation Round Up for Youth Summer Internship Program and offer hands-on experience in every aspect of producing full-scale youth musical theater.

Internship Highlights

  • 12 paid positions | $12/hour (part-time; approx. 226 total work hours throughout the summer)
  • Six show locations: Atwood, Colby, Goodland, Hoxie, Quinter & Oakley
  • Two interns assigned to each location
  • Preference given to students who can reside in or near their assigned show location
  • Work with professional staff to produce our region-wide summer theater festival

What You’ll Do

Interns assist with:

  • Rehearsals & youth engagement
  • Set, prop & costume work
  • Lights, sound & backstage operations
  • Marketing, ticket sales & fundraising
  • Learning the behind-the-scenes ins and outs of theater production

Who Can Apply

  • High school or college students (age 16+)
  • Students from or attending school in northwest / north-central Kansas
  • A valid driver’s license is preferred (travel required)

Why It Matters

Our festival provides free participation for youth ages 5–18, thanks to generous sponsors, grants, and community support—bringing high-quality arts experiences to small towns across the region.

Disney's The Lion King has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world, and now you have the opportunity to produce this one-of-a-kind musical in your community. Bring the African savanna to life on your stage with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale.

      This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, Moana JR. is sure to bring out the hero within each of us.

        Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task — if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn't be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.

          When young Alice finds herself in a strange world where everything seems upside down, she must find her way home…and find herself along the way. As she travels through Wonderland, she encounters all of the iconic characters that audiences have come to love: including the ever-tardy White Rabbit, the grinning Cheshire Cat, a cool Caterpillar, the wacky Mad Hatter, and the hot-tempered Queen of Hearts.

          In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl whose enchanting voice he's been seeking.

          A story of true love and acceptance between sisters, Frozen JR. expands upon the emotional relationship and journey between Princesses Anna and Elsa. When faced with danger, the two discover their hidden potential and the powerful bond of sisterhood. With a cast of beloved characters and loaded with magic, adventure, and plenty of humor, Frozen JR. is sure to thaw even the coldest heart!

          General notes

          Rehearsal Details

          • Rehearsals will be held weekly, Monday through Thursday, unless otherwise noted.
          • Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle to rehearsals each day.
          • Rehearsals with participants is limited to one (1) hour per day. However, additional coachings with specific cast members may be scheduled.
          • Daily rehearsal schedules will be dependent on show needs and cast availability. You must attend rehearsals when required. Weekly schedules will be emailed in advance of each Monday.
          • ALL cast members, crew, etc., MUST ATTEND ALL show week rehearsals arriving at the designated "Call times" in order to put on costumes and makeup, warm up and prepare for the rehearsal/performances.
          • The student intern director will arrive at the rehearsal local/venue no less than 30 minutes before and remain no less than 30 minutes after rehearsal. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before the designated rehearsal time and plan to pick up your child at the designated end time. Show directors will be traveling from several rehearsal locations daily and may not be as readily available as the student intern director for questions.
          • Email communications for each show will come from "mainstreetartscouncil@gmail.com." Please add our email to your contacts to ensure receipt of all messages.
          • Please check your email regularly for updates and weekly rehearsal schedules

          Fundraising & Ticket Sales

          • All participants (with parent guidance) are requested to assist with selling memberships/program ads in support of the show in which they are performing. The student intern director will hand out materials and instruct all participants on the process. It is important to remember that participation in our festival is FREE to all youth interested; however, we will need your assistance in helping us keep it free by going out into your community, telling our "story" to area businesses/individuals and encouraging them to support it monetarily.
          • Additionally, all participants are requested to help promote ticket sales by reaching out to family, friends, neighbors, etc., and encouraging attending, emailing show fliers and information, helping distribute fliers around town, etc.

          Audition Requirements

          Performers interested in auditioning for a named role, must complete all audition materials listed below and a full audition consisting of a prepared vocal solo and monologue (see examples below). Those interested in solely being an important member of the ensemble are only required to submit the Participant Registration Form; however, they may complete a full audition if desired.

          Please plan to attend an audition date/location that works best for your schedule (Details TBD). Please contact us via email (mainstreetartscouncil@gmail.com) if you need special arrangements due to scheduling conflicts.

          AUDITION DATES/LOCATIONS

          We are coordinating audition dates with the goal of holding them during Spring Break between March 16-22. If you are unable to attend an in-person audition, please let us know. We'd ask that you send us a video audition with your solo and monologue for casting consideration by March 31. Videos can be emailed to mainstreetartscouncil@gmail.com.           Audition Process

          Your audition will consist of the following items.

          1. Vocal Solo

          Perform a musical theater song of your choice “a cappella” (unaccompanied).

          2. Monologue

          Select and memorize a monologue from this list or one of your own choice.
